Jack Carroll

Hi, my name is Jack Carroll.  I was asked, by Barb Oviatt, to put a short note together for the Liberty Lake Athletic Club web site.

Approximately 3 years ago I had a full blown stroke. As soon as I could walk I had my wife take me down to the club to get started walking around the gym.  That was a good move for me. With all of the equipment available there were many things that I could work on to try to gain some progress on the problems left by the stroke. After a few months I was encouraged to try to get into the Yoga classes. I had participated in Yoga in the past, but this was a new experience for me.  Partially by hiding in the back of the class and partially by the encouragement of Barb and Jan I was able to continue on with the Yoga. I have a lot better sense of balance and flexibility then I would have had without it.

In addition to the Yoga I hit the weights a couple of times a week and do a little swimming.  Almost every day I try to walk 3 or 4 miles with my dog, Sparky.  These activities have given me the ability to enjoy my other favorite past times of sailing and kayaking, and I am even getting better with my guitar playing.

The bottom line for me is that besides the exercise, the social interaction is very important for people trying to recover from a debilitating problem. If you know anyone in that situation I would suggest that you encourage them to go get a workout.
